Women's Commitee
The SFWU recognises the role and importance of women in the union and the workforce, and we have a National Women's Standing Committee who play a central role in our union.
"The role of the Women's Committee is to receive and process information from our own union about relevant issues for our working women, to develop policy and recommendations for present to our National Executive and other unions. We also network within our communities, and support working women to achieve better conditions and pay equity. We aim to become more politically empowered so that we can influence social and employment roles for women and overall to empower women to be better able to choose a life they want."
National Women's Committee Convenor, Heather Woolstencroft
How does it work?
The union's constitution provides for standing committees that represent the interests of identified parties. At the moment we have Te Runanga, Women's Committee and the Pacific Islands Komiti.
The National Womens standing committee is made up of three elected representatives from each region, the National Convenor and a staff support person.
Who is on the Women's Committee?
The National Women's Standing Committee consists of a national convenor, and 3 elected representatives from each region (Northern, Central and Southern).
The National Convenor is elected at the National Delegates conference, the regional positions are elected at the regional conferences.
The convenors of each region are able to be elected to sit on the National Executive, which gives our working women strong voice within our union. The national convenor has a place on the National Executive automatically. Her role also means that women are represented on the CTU Women's Committee
This gives women a voice nationally within many other unions.
